Holiday Tipping

Lately there has been a lot of house talk over holiday tipping. While Gotham indexed, the New York Times provides some insight.

A related survey of more than 1,800 Americans found average tip ranges of $10 to $20 for a newspaper carrier, $10 to $25 for a sanitation or recycling collector, $20 to $50 for a child care provider and $25 to $75 for a housekeeper….

Many New Yorkers find it customary to leave a little something for their letter carriers, but the United States Postal Service discourages tipping. Letter carriers are prohibited from accepting cash gifts, according to Patricia McGovern, a regional spokeswoman for the Postal Service. Mail carriers may, however, accept small noncash gifts — like a gift card or cookies — as long as the value is under $20 and the gift cannot be converted to cash. “Our letter carriers do the same job for every customer,” she said. “There’s no need to tip them.”

    A-ha! “$10-15 for a sanitation worker”! And who was it among you that called me batty? Evidentially, in Glen Rock, we just know how to be polite…
